During downtime I find it relaxing to quickly reach for my phone to see what is going on in pop culture. However, have you ever noticed that you are reaching for you phone too often?
I am definitely guilty of over consuming pop culture. It often starts off as a five minute break from homework. Five minutes becomes ten, and then ten turns into an entire night of a pop culture marathon.
Like most people my age, I find it hard to tear myself away from my phone, even when I am supposed to be doing something productive like school work or actual face-to-face interaction with my family and friends. I even use my phone to get rid of awkwardness, avoid people or events, and replace any weirdness.
With so many social media apps to chose from — including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat — there is something new every time you refresh your page. Users have so many options its hard not engage with them each constantly.
In my previous post I talked about allowing yourself to have a “pop culture pause” — but I think we also need to know when to step away from pop culture and step back into reality.
Just think about how much more productive you would be if you used your phone half as much as you do now. Don’t get me; wrong pop culture isn’t a bad thing. In fact I think it is what helps define our generation. However, too much of a good thing can’t be good for you either.
